Commentary
It is all over at St James' Park as Aston Villa end a 17-game winless run away at Newcastle with a 2-0 victory. A first-half stunner from Emiliano Buendia gave them the advantage at the break and, despite plenty of probing, it never truly felt like it would come for the hosts in the second half, even after posting an expected goals figure of 2.3. An injury to Joelinton moments after the restart added further frustration for Eddie Howe’s side, who were already without captain Bruno Guimaraes. Trippier flashed a ball across the face of Martinez’s goal that evaded Barnes before Gordon could only fire over, while Rogers and Watkins both tested Pope from outside the area. Watkins then struck just shy of the 90-minute mark to put the result beyond doubt and seal all three points. Despite recording an xG of just 1.16, Unai Emery’s side battled hard throughout and built from a solid defensive base, where Emiliano Martinez, making his 200th Premier League appearance for Villa, showed real authority between the posts. Newcastle miss the chance to climb the table and remain ninth, before taking to the Champions League where they face PSG in their final league-phase match on Wednesday. Villa stay third, move level on points with Manchester City and sit just four behind leaders Arsenal for now. They will host Salzburg in their final Europa League fixture before the knockouts. That is all from us here. Thank you for joining and goodbye!

Maatsen pops up once again and this time looks to shoot from the right side of the box before going to ground and appealing for a penalty. The referee immediately waves it away and, on second inspection, it appears the full-back simply kicks the turf, which causes him to fall.
